Year 8 Arts Week

Year 9 Students Moyan and Daria were set an important journalistic assignment to find out more about what has been happening during Year 8 Arts Week. They set out to discover the different elements required to deliver such a huge project for all the artists, dancers and actors involved.

As it is Year 8 Arts Week, we decided that we wanted to get some insight into each of the five activities: music, dance, art, set design and drama/school play. During each visit, we interviewed one to three people to ask for their opinion on the activity that they chose.

Music

First we went over to the music block to interview some students. We spoke to Aasiyah who was playing the violin. We asked her what song she was practising and she said she was playing a song by Miley Cyrus, Flowers. She was working alongside her friend Joko. Aasiyah’s favourite part of the workshop was learning how to hold the bow of the violin and playing it. Amber and Caitlin said they enjoyed the percussion workshop as it was fun and “high participation” for everyone.

Dance

We next interviewed a student in the dance workshop and asked her a few questions. When we asked her what she enjoyed the most about her group, she said that it was being with her friends, and during rehearsals, she said “we rehearse, we train and we look after each other”.

Art

We then moved on over to the art workshop and we interviewed a student called Zunairah. She was doing cartoon art portraits. She described the art process as hard and intricate because she wasn’t used to drawing so much. She replied that the outlining of the portrait and the funniest part was mixing the paint to create new colours.

Set Design

We interviewed a student called Amanpreet involved in set building. When we asked her what she enjoyed the most about the experience in creating the props, she said that she really liked seeing other people’s perspectives and the ideas they have that contribute to the overall piece and when we asked her what she learned during this experience. She said that she can now handle a box cutter and use it to cut as well as doing more advanced sewing.

Drama

Lastly, we interviewed Kashayla who was in charge of sound effects for the Year 8 school play. When we asked her why she chose her role and control the lights. The most challenging bit for her was to decide when to put the sounds effects and to make sure they work. When we asked her what she was most excited it was the final outcome and to see her hard work pay off.

We really enjoyed observing and getting a taste of what they were doing and also reporting it. We hope that next year’s Year 8s will have as much creative fun as they did!
